EDITORIAL

Welcome to the First Issue of Journal of Plant Registrations

Jeff Pedersen, Interim editor

Journal of Plant Registrations

Welcome to the first issue of the Journal of Plant Registrations! As most of you are aware, the Board of Directors of the Crop Science Society of America decided last November to publish registration articles describing newly developed plant varieties, parental lines, germplasms, genetic stocks, populations, and genetic stocks in this new journal. This change in venue created opportunities to improve plant registration articles by allowing us to change the format and expand the content of registration articles. The new format is described in instructions to authors submitting articles to the Journal of Plant Registrations which can be viewed at https://secure.asa-cssa-sssa.org/publications/pdf/2007_JPR_instructions.pdf. The new format encourages more complete description of new plant materials by allowing tabular data, photographs, and figures. The new format and review procedures parallel that of other quality refereed journal articles. It is my goal to ensure that the high scientific standards of other ASA/CSSA/SSSA journals are maintained in this new journal so that improved plant materials are well documented in the scientific literature, and also to ensure that developers of improved plant materials receive appropriate credit for their intellectual contributions by publication in a widely circulated and recognized refereed journal.

The results of the format changes will be more apparent in future issues of the Journal of Plant Registrations. During the transition from the old Crop Science format to the new Journal of Plant Registrations format, all registration articles submitted prior to March 29, 2007 were "grandfathered" under the old author guidelines. Nearly all registration articles in this issue were prepared and reviewed under the old guidelines. However, one wonder author, Scott Haley of Colorado State University, volunteered to re-write his registration article describing ‘Ripper’ wheat using the new instructions to authors so that readers of this first issue could see first hand what the journal will look like in the future. Ripper is featured on the cover of this first issue of the Journal of Plant Registrations, and its registration article appears as the first article in this new journal. I hope that everyone, whether reader or contributor, can realize added value from the new format.
